A French artillery officer of the Grande Armée, leather map case under arm, calm standing pose. The man working out where the guns will sit before anyone fires a round. Period: Napoleonic Era, 1799-1815.
Napoleonic artillery was a technical branch - officers came from the École d'Application at Metz and ran range, fire-plan, and battery siting on paper before iron moved. Bonaparte himself rose through this trade.
