Pack Mule With Campaign Saddle

A pack mule under campaign saddle and panniers, rolled blanket, simple bridle. The unromantic backbone of every Napoleonic march. Period: Napoleonic Era, 1799-1815.

Grande Armée logistics moved on horses, mules, oxen, and requisitioned carts. Mules carried officer's kit, ammunition, light field-pieces, and the small mountain of personal effects an army on foot needed. They survived where horses did not.

Painting tips

  • Coat: warm brown or grey-dun.
  • Saddle/panniers: dark leather with sepia wash.
  • Blanket: muted blue, grey, or madder - period regiment colour optional.
