A Red Army camp cook in padded jacket and apron, large ladle in hand, the still point of every field kitchen. The figure who feeds the platoon and rarely makes it into the photographs. Period: WWII Eastern Front, 1941-1945.
Soviet rifle divisions ran on the polevaya kukhnya - the wheeled field kitchen - turning out kasha, shchi, and tea by the bucket. The cook (povar) was a serious appointment: bad food broke a unit faster than the cold.
Painting tips
- Telogreika (padded jacket): muted khaki-brown or olive.
