Spartan Herald With Staff

A Spartan herald (kerux) standing with the herald's twin-snake staff, simple chiton and traveling cloak, posture mid-announcement. The voice that carried decisions of the council to assembly and city. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.

Greek heralds held sacred inviolable status across all city-states. In Sparta they announced council decisions to the apella, called the army to muster, and carried the kerukeion staff that guaranteed safe passage on embassies. Spartan heralds families were hereditary (the Talthybiadae).

Painting tips

  • Chiton: undyed off-white wool or pale red.
  • Cloak: matching, slightly darker.
  • Staff: warm wood shaft, dark serpents at the top with bare-metal highlights.
  • Sandals: dark leather.
