Rope Coil Pile

A loose pile of thick hemp rope coils - rigging hawser, anchor cable, mooring lines. Period: Columbus voyages, 1492-1504.

Caravel rigging ran on hand-laid hemp rope produced in massive quantities by 15th-century Spanish and Portuguese yards. A working rope coil on deck or shore is the universal age-of-sail signature.

Painting tips

  • Rope: pale tan with sepia wash in coils.
  • Tarred sections: darker brown-black streaks.
  • Wet/dry contrast: gloss medium on the underside if scene is wet deck.
  • Sand and salt dust at the contact line.
