A Civil War side drum on its sling strap, set down on its rim - brass shell, rope tensioners, painted hoops, sticks across the head. Period: American Civil War, Battle of Gettysburg, 1-3 July 1863.
Brass-shell rope-tensioned side drums set the pace and signalled formation across both Union and Confederate regiments. Painted hoops often carried unit name or eagle insignia. The unattended drum reads as casualty point or rest position.
