A helot carrying a large terracotta water jar (hydria) on the shoulder, short tunic, no cloak, bare feet. The unfree labour that fed Spartan society. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.
The helots were state-owned serfs - originally Messenians and Laconians enslaved during Spartan conquest. They farmed Spartiate land, attended their masters, and outnumbered the Spartiates many times over. The relationship is described as exceptionally brutal by Thucydides and Plutarch.
Painting tips
- Tunic: undyed coarse linen or wool, dirty.
