A Spartan Gerousia elder seated in heavy himation, beard, staff resting against the knee, hand raised in measured speech. The senior figure of the Spartan council. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.
The Gerousia was Sparta's council of elders - 28 men over 60 plus the two kings, elected for life. It prepared business for the apella (assembly), tried capital cases, and shaped foreign policy. Described in detail by Plutarch (Lycurgus), Xenophon, and Aristotle.
