A Sahel civilian carrying a plastic jerrycan of water, modest clothing, calm walking pose. The figure that grounds a military checkpoint in the place it actually exists. Period: Modern war, 1990-present, Sahel region.
Water access defines life across the Sahel. The plastic 20-litre jerrycan is the universal container - hauled from wells, taps, and trucks across Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad. A checkpoint without a civilian at it isn't a checkpoint, it's a guardpost.
Painting tips
- Clothing: muted indigo, off-white, or dyed cotton (boubou, dress, headwrap).
- Jerrycan: faded yellow, dusty.
- Skin: warm brown.
- Dust on the lower garments and feet.
