A bundled and tied canvas sail - thick linen/hemp cloth folded and roped, ready for stowage or replacement. Period: Columbus voyages, 1492-1504.
Caravel sails - velas - were heavy linen-hemp canvas, periodically replaced after wear, tear, or storm damage. A bundled spare on deck or shore is the workshop side of Atlantic navigation.
Painting tips
- Canvas: off-white with sepia wash in folds.
- Ropes: pale tan.
- Optional faded red cross painted on a visible fold (Spanish royal/order pattern).
- Salt and dust at the contact line.
