A small market stall fragment - two posts, a sagging canvas awning that follows gravity, no building behind it. The kind of partial piece you set against a wall edge to suggest a full stall row. Period: Colonial Era, c. 1500-1800 CE.
Open-air market stalls under stretched canvas dominated colonial settlement streets and dockside squares. Stalls were rebuilt daily from a few posts and a length of sail-grade cloth - cheap, modular, universal.
Painting tips
- Canvas: off-white or sun-faded ochre, dirt on the lower edges.
- Posts: weathered timber with sepia wash.
- Lashings: muted tan rope.
- Optional: a thin stripe of dye on the awning for a busier vendor.
