A crossbowman down on one knee, foot in the stirrup of his weapon, hauling the string with a belt hook or windlass. Slow to load, brutal at the shot. Period: Battle of Grunwald, 15 July 1410.
Both sides at Grunwald fielded crossbowmen - Polish and town levies for the Crown, Bohemian, Moravian and Pomeranian mercenaries for the Order. Steel-prod crossbows were the heaviest missile weapon of the field, capable of defeating mail and even plate at close range.
