Classified Briefcase Stack

A small stack of leather briefcases with bare-metal locks and wax-seal tabs. Compact, narrative, the silhouette of paper trade. Period: Cold War, c. 1947-1991.

Classified couriers (spetssvyaz) moved diplomatic and intelligence material across the Soviet bloc in sealed briefcases - documented across both military attaché and KGB courier services. A stack outside the cipher room or beside a desk is one of the truest period silhouettes.

Painting tips

  • Leather: warm brown or near-black, sepia wash.
  • Locks: bare-metal highlights.
  • Wax seals: bright red with darker recesses.
  • Optional courier-tag in pale off-white at the handle.
