A short wide ale barrel - the British and Northern European cask profile for beer and ale, broader than tall, tap bung at the bilge. Period: multi-era, c. 1300 CE - 1900 CE.
The squat profile - distinct from the taller French wine tonneau - was the working barrel of English alehouses, German breweries, and Baltic-trade beer ships from the late Middle Ages forward. Wider bilge = more belly = easier to roll without dropping.
Painting tips
- Staves: warm wood with sepia wash; ale-stained darker near the bilge.
- Hoops: dark iron with rust at the joints.
- Bung/tap: pale wood plug or bare brass spigot.
- Wet ring at the bilge from drips.
