Columbus's 1492 journal records parrots taken by the Taíno as gifts and carried back to Castile - the first New World exotic to reach Europe. Cuban, Hispaniolan, and Bahamian parrots (now extinct or endangered) coloured every contact-era beach.
Painting tips
- Body: bright bottle green with darker wash.
- Head: red or yellow patch.
- Wing/tail: blue and red flashes.
- Beak: pale bone with darker tip.
- Branch: warm wood with sepia wash.
