A heavy hemp rope coil resting on a banded barrel — dock furniture of any Norse fjord settlement. Period: Viking Age, c. 793-1066 CE.
Norse harbors lived on cordage and cooperage: ropes for the boats, barrels for the catch. They were stacked together at the quayside ready to grab. This piece fuses both into one mountable dock prop — dirty rope on top, bound barrel below.
Painting tips
- Rope: tan with sepia spiral wash, slightly damp at the base.
- Barrel: warm oak, iron bands drybrushed steel.
