Perioikoi Petition Bearer

A perioikoi citizen in plain tunic and traveling cloak, scroll case in hand, calm standing pose. The free non-Spartiate Lacedaemonian, bringing business to the council. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.

The perioikoi ("dwellers around") were free Laconian and Messenian communities subject to Sparta but lacking citizenship - traders, craftsmen, sailors, and the manpower behind much of Spartan economic life. They served in the army and brought petitions to the central council.

Painting tips

  • Tunic: undyed off-white or muted natural wool.
  • Cloak: muted blue, brown, or natural.
  • Scroll case: warm leather with darker straps.
  • Sandals: dark leather, slightly worn (traveler).
