A heavily mud-crusted old barrel - thick caked mud at the base, dirt smear up the staves, hoops half-rusted. The barrel that has lived a hard outdoor life. Period: multi-era, c. 100 CE - 1900 CE.
Working barrels at quayside, in farmyards, and on military camps got dirty fast - rain, mud, animal traffic, repeated rolling. The weathered piece adds visual contrast to a stack of fresh casks. Universal scene-dressing.
Painting tips
- Staves (visible): warm wood with heavy sepia wash, lighter drybrush.
- Mud crust: dark wet brown at the base, drying lighter brown higher up.
- Hoops: rusted iron with bare-metal scrape highlights.
- Optional bright moss-green at the contact line.
