A squared upright stone (horos) - plain face with incised Greek lettering, weathered base half-sunk in the ground. The legal marker of Spartan territory or council property. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.
Greek horoi marked boundaries of fields, sanctuaries, mortgaged property, and civic spaces. In Sparta they bounded sacred precincts, gerousia ground, and the borders of Lacedaemon proper from perioikoi territory. Hundreds survive in epigraphic record across the Greek world.
