High Back Dining Chair

A tall straight-backed dining chair - spindle back, turned legs, plain plank seat. The everyday dining-room chair of European households from the 17th century forward. Period: multi-era, c. 1600 CE - 1900 CE.

The straight-backed spindle chair - English Windsor pattern and its Continental variants - dominated middle-class dining rooms across Europe and the Americas. Survives unchanged into modern repro furniture.

Painting tips

  • Wood: warm walnut/cherry brown with sepia wash.
  • Spindles: slightly darker at the ends.
  • Optional period paint: dark green, black, or muted ochre.
  • Dust and wear at the foot contact.
