A woven willow crate of cleaned fish — the unit of trade at any Norse fishing pier. Period: Viking Age, c. 793-1066 CE.
Norse traders moved fresh and salted fish in woven willow crates that could be lashed onto carts or carried two at a time on a pole. This piece fuses the crate with a top mass of fish, ready as quay clutter or trader's stock.
