A section of Doric column - fluted shaft, simple capital (echinus and abacus), no base. The austere architectural language of Archaic-Classical Sparta. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.
The Doric order - heavy fluted shaft, plain capital - was the default Lacedaemonian and Peloponnesian temple architecture. Compared to elaborate Ionic Athens, the Spartan public sphere favoured plain, severe forms - a deliberate aesthetic of austerity.
