A folded himation cloak bundled and set aside on a bench or stone block - heavy wool, soft folds, the universal Greek garment laid down between meetings. Period: Archaic-Classical Sparta, c. 700-200 BCE.
The himation was the heavy outer wool wrap of every Greek civic male - removed when seated for long council sessions or athletic training. Sparta's iconic red himation marked the citizen body; a folded bundle is the quiet visual cue of an attending speaker.
Painting tips
- Wool: deep muted red (Spartan citizen) or undyed off-white with sepia wash in folds.
- Folds: deeper recess shadows.
- Optional simple woven border in contrasting tone at the visible hem.
